In recent years, the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU has led to significant changes in the requirements for pet relocation into the country.
The requirements for dogs and cats traveling from the USA to the UK can change often and may depend on various factors, including the pet’s origin, age, vaccination status, and breed.
Current Requirements USA-UK
Microchipping: Your pets must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit pet microchip.
Rabies Vaccination: Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies only AFTER they have been given a microchip. The rabies must be given at least 21 days prior to travel to the UK.
Tick & Tapeworm Treatment: Dogs must receive a tapeworm treatment (with praziquantel) and be treated against ticks between 24 and 120 hours before entering the UK.
Export Exam & Health Certificate: Pets must be seen by a USDA accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel for an export exam and completion of their international health certificate. Health Certificates MUST be endorsed by the USDA.
It’s important to obtain the most up-to-date information from World Pet Travel who stays up to date on requirements from official sources, such as the UK government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Arrival Into the UK
Pets usually arrive at one of the UK’s approved entry points, which are designated ports, airports, and terminals equipped to handle pet arrivals. These entry points are typically staffed by officials from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).
Upon arrival, customs and border control officials, as well as APHA staff, will check pet’s microchip for identification and the required documentation, including the pet passport or health certificate. They will verify that all entry requirements have been met.
Once all checks are complete, pets will be released to their owners, and they can proceed with their onward journey within the UK.

“For over two months, WPT helped me to organise the relocation of my two 9-year-old cats, Thelma and Louise, from Ohio to Scotland.
