Understanding IPATA: Why We are Proud Members

If you’ve begun researching requirements for shipping your pet internationally, you have probably seen that many airlines and destinations alike require an IPATA shipper to make pet airline bookings or handle pet imports.

It is helpful to understand what IPATA is and why we have been proud members for over 2 decades and now serve on the board of directors supporting pet owners with their relocations both far and near.

What Is IPATA?

IPATA, or International Pet and Animal Transportation Association, is a group of professional pet shippers that are registered with government organizations within their country and follow the rules and regulations of the Live Animals Regulations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). For IPATA members in the U.S. they must be registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and follow the rules of the USDA’s Animal Welfare Act.

“The International Pet and Animal Transportation Association is a non-profit trade association of independent members who are dedicated to the safe and humane transport of pets and other animals”

The History of IPATA

IPATA was formed in 1979 as a networking group to help fellow pet shippers around the world connect and assist pet owners with their relocations. What started as a small group of six pet shippers has grown to over 485 pet shipping members servicing over 90 countries worldwide.

Why Choose An IPATA Shipper?

When you work with an IPATA member, you can trust that they will take the guess work out of a very complex process when relocating your pets. Here is what you can expect by using an IPATA shipper:

  1. Expertise and Experience: IPATA shippers are professionals who specialize in the safe and legal transportation of pets across borders. They have extensive knowledge of the complex regulations, paperwork, and procedures involved in international pet transportation. This expertise helps ensure a smooth and trouble-free relocation process.
  2. Compliance with Regulations: International pet transportation involves complying with a range of country-specific regulations, including health certificates, vaccinations, and quarantine requirements. IPATA shippers stay up-to-date with these regulations and can guide pet owners through the process to ensure full compliance.
  3. Pet Safety and Welfare: IPATA members prioritize the well-being and safety of the pets they transport. They use appropriate carriers, ventilation systems, and handling techniques to minimize stress and discomfort for the animals during transit. This level of care is crucial for the health and happiness of the pets.
  4. Network and Resources: IPATA has a global network of professionals and resources, allowing for efficient and reliable pet transportation worldwide. They have connections with airlines, veterinarians, and local authorities, making it easier to coordinate every aspect of the relocation.
  5. Peace of Mind: Knowing that you’re working with an IPATA shipper provides peace of mind for pet owners. You can trust that your pet’s journey will be handled by professionals who are dedicated to the safety and well-being of your beloved companion.
  6. Reduced Risk of Errors: International pet relocations involve a lot of paperwork and documentation. IPATA shippers are experienced in handling these documents accurately and efficiently, reducing the risk of errors that could lead to delays or issues with pet entry into the destination country.
  7. Efficiency: IPATA shippers can streamline the logistics of pet transportation, making the process more efficient and less stressful for pet owners. They can help with everything from booking flights to arranging quarantine accommodations if necessary.

Using an IPATA shipper is recommended for pet transportation because it ensures a higher level of expertise, compliance with regulations, and overall care for the pets being transported. It provides pet owners with the confidence that their furry or feathered family members will have a safe and well-managed journey during international relocations.
