Crate Training
It is a good idea to buy an airline-approved travel crate months before your departure. It should be big enough for your pet to stand up, turn around, and lie down easily while standing. Place the crate in an area of your home where they feel most comfortable, preferrably where the family spends most of their free time. Leave the door off and let the dog explore the crate at their leisure in the beginning.  If possible, place your pets bed inside of the crate. This bed cannot be overstuffed as it could inhibit the airflow and cause problems during travel. Therefore if baby’s current bed is a larger one, it is best to buy him a brand new cushy foam bed to line the bottom of the kennel just for the upcoming adventure! Allowing your pet to acclimate to his crate at his leisure will help your pet relax during travel and he view his crate as a safe haven rather than a holding cell.

Toys & Clothes

Providing your pet with their favorite toy or blanket in their travel crate may help ease their anxiety. You may also include an article of clothing with your scent to comfort them while they are away from you. Make sure that any item you include in their crate cannot be chewed up or eaten.

Pheromones

When a mama has pups, for weeks after they are born she releases what is called a pheromone. A pheromone is a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behavior or physiology of others of its species. This pheromone helps calms and soothes her puppies, giving them a sense of security and comfort.

This pheromone has been copied synthetically and is sold in two forms, spray and a collar. You can ask your veterinarian if they have either of these items. You can also check your local pet store, as several carry different forms of the synthetic pheromone.

Homeopathic/Herbal Remedies

Some people swear by the use of homeopathic/herbal remedies. These remedies are made up of the essences of flowers and plants. One of the more popular remedies is called Rescue Remedy for Pets which can be administered
easily through an oral spray application. There are several products on the market that are worth trying. Speak with your veterinarian to see if they have any preferences/suggestions.

Sedating Your Pet

NEVER GIVE YOUR PET ANY SEDATIVES BEFORE THEY FLY!!! This can be EXTREMELY dangerous and potentially life threatening.
